Quick trip

March 6-8, 2014: Not much to report. Dakota and I made a quick trip up just to check on things. We haven't been back to the trapline for about five weeks now, so it was time for a trip and it was great to be back. The fresh air and solitude was welcomed.

The snow certainly hasn't left. We arrived to about four inches of the white stuff on the cabin roof. But with two days of plus 8 Celsius weather, when we left Sunday afternoon, the roof was bare. The cold weather we had been experiencing for the past three weeks had frozen the creek solid; no water could be seen or heard under its blanket of snow. It takes a lot of continuous cold weather to freeze the creek, but this had obviously been enough.

Saturday we spent touring some of the trapline and we hauled in two loads of wood from Clear Trail. The sled doesn't hold a lot of wood but we at least replenished the outside wood pile for a while. The real wood gathering will begin late summer and early fall.

Our lynx population seems to be holding up well. Wherever we went we found lynx tracks, including a set right behind the outhouse. We never saw any ermine tracks, but the squirrels seemed to have found new voice and our grouse are doing well.

And that's about it! Below are a few photos of some wood gathering.

Until next time!
